Ten Spanish Artists

When we study art we tend to concentrate on France and Italy, with the Netherlands, UK and USA forming a second tier. Which is unfair to Spain which through history has produced large numbers of truly great painters, go to Spain and art is everywhere. Selecting just 10 is not easy, so I omitted all living artists. When narrowing it down I selected Sorolla over Dali just because. And I have placed the artists in date of birth order since it would be invidious to try and place them on any measure of merit. These 10 are all special in their own way, great artists well worth further study. And this is obviously all in my own humble opinion.

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco. 1541 – 1614

Jusepe de Ribera 1591 – 1652

Francisco de Zurbarán 1598 – 1664

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez 1599 -1660

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo 1617 – 1682

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes 1746 – 1828

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida 1863 – 1923

Pablo Ruiz Picasso 1881 – 1973

José Victoriano González-Pérez, known as Juan Gris 1887 – 1927

Joan Miró i Ferrà 1893 – 1983
